One of America’s most enduring plays, “Long Day’s Journey into Night” is a worthy addition to a Shakespeare festival. A sobering drama based on O’Neill’s own family, the play looks at how the Tyrone family uses drugs and alcohol to mask the problems they can’t confront. It was built for San Francisco’s mayor in the 1870s, fell into. There’s an old carriage house in the Mission. Rounding out this summer’s playbill is Eugene O’Neill’s “Long Days Journey Into Night,” opening July 21. SF’s new Secret Garden restaurant only has 19 seats and no reservations. The play is a wonderful mix of stirring battles and raucous escapades in the tavern. In this coming-of-age tale, Hal eventually steps up to the plate and helps to defeat his father’s enemies.
